Race For The Galaxy by Rio Grande Games offers the perfect combination to fans of science fiction and strategy games. Numerous combinations of play and varying strategies keep the game fresh time after time. Players race to colonize the galaxy and become the most powerful space empire by using cards that represent worlds or technical and social developments.
Each round consists of one or more of the following phases or actions, performed in this order: (1) Explore (2) Develop (3) Settle (4) Consume (5) Produce. At the beginning of each round, players secretly choose an action card of their preference and then all players simultaneously turn the cards face up. These cards determine which phases are performed during the round. During each phase all players perform the actions associated with that phase. The player(s) who select a phase get a bonus during that phase of the round.
The Explore phase of the game allows players to draw cards and decide which of these cards to add to their hand. In the Develop phase, each player may simultaneously select a development from his hand of cards to build. Settle allows a player to place a world in his "tableau". During the Produce phase some worlds produce goods, represented by face down cards. These goods can be discarded for victory points or sold to add cards to the player’s hand by selecting Consume.
Strategy includes card management, phase and bonus selection, and management of card powers as you build your empire. The easiest way to learn how to play is to keep the game rules handy and then just dive right in and learn as you go along.
The game ends at the end of a round either when at least one player has 12 or more cards in his "tableau" or when all of the victory point tokens have been claimed by the players. The player with the most victory points wins the game.
This game is good for 2 to 4 players, that are at least 12 years of age, and playing time takes about 30 to 60 minutes. This is a good lunch break game since it doesn't require an extended amount of time, although you'll want to play it again and again. As a bonus, Race For The Galaxy's sci-fi artwork is really out of this world!Read a PDF of the game rules
